After a bad deal with Mojo
Records and constant touring as The Bogus Toms, vocalist Robert
"Beast" Best and drummer Louie "Woodsh!t" Shilling
joined forces with a bassist named Fling from England, and became the band
Uncle Tom.
The band calls themselves a cross between the
Sex Pistols and The Monkees, combining guitar rock with a pop sound and catchy
tunes. Their album opens surprisingly with a classic guitar intro to "I'm
In Love With My Gun," that reminds me of Lynyrd Skynyrd "Tuesday's
Gone" and then takes a turn and never goes back.
With tracks like "Nice Guys" and
"Your Mother Told Me," this band strikingly resembles the glammed-out
sleaze rock band Star Star, who, as you may recall, had an album out years ago
called The Love Drag Years. Their tunes are catchy, in the vein of the Escape
Club (thinking back to the eighties) and more recently, the Marvelous 3 or even
D Generation. They are sure to catch the attention of college radio listeners
and those who enjoy bands with a punk flavor and lots of vocal attitude.
With more than 25,000 downloads at MP3.com, an
award winning Web site, and radio play around the world, it seems that Uncle Tom
has created enough buzz to attract some attention. They have recently been
approached by several labels, including the majors like Sony and Elektra, as
well as several indie companies.
Uncle Tom is:
Robert ""Beast" Best - Lead Vocals
Louie "Woodsh!t" Shilling - Drums
Fling - Bass/Vocals
