TPRS Spotlight Artist STONE With names like Wilson, Garcia, and James, you
would think that this band would smoothly fit into the a genre classification
along with bands like the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and other long-haired
hippies of the sort, but a single listen to their new album Here Before will
tell a different story. Stone, who apparently named themselves after
Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard as a joke over naming rights, delivers a southern
sound with jazz and blues roots and soft melodies that leave them, at times,
sounding more like Eric Clapton and perhaps even John Cougar Mellencamp and Rick
Springfield than Skynyrd. Though, there is no denying that this band sparks up a
southern sound that leaves you wondering how exactly it is that they are based
out of Los Angeles. Stone has been featured on the soundtrack for
the John Carpenter film Vampires, and tracks from their album Here Before (SX3
Music) have earned them ads on the Blues Deluxe syndicated radio show and DMX
Music's Rock and Blues Channel. The trio's sophomore release includes many
songs about their travels on the road throughout 1999, which included continuous
stops at various Hard Rock Cafes, House of Blues, and B.B. King Blues Clubs in
the major music cities of the South and West. Though, TPRS.com found one of the
best tracks on the album to be "Heaven Only Knows," which features a
vocal performance by Brad Wilson, who in this instance sounds very similar to
the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band's Noah Hunt. For more information about Stone, visit their
