Legend
A rather obscure NWOBHM
group I honestly never heard of, Legend has been brought to the new millennium
in the form of a comprehensive and well-packaged 26 track, 2 CD set by Monster
Records. Receiving items like this to review and write up is truly a treat as
you can hear the rawer than a marathon runner’s feet effort put forth by the
band. It reminds me of the neighborhood metal bands in the early to mid 80’s
who would throw beer parties to attract a crowd and more importantly, women. A
low budget production and most likely an inexperienced producer has his hand in
the mix yet the effort shines through.
Considering how many of the bands from the NWOBHM era that were signed to labels
like Neat in UK or to bigger labels like Mercury (Def Leppard) and EMI (Iron
Maiden), it is strange that Legend was not in the early wave of bands picked up.
Although, the answers to problems within the band lie within the CD booklet,
there is no denying the guitar playing of Peter Haworth. Although the
topics of many Legend tracks were not exactly upbeat, his playing ability was a
definite highlight of the band.
Monster Records deserves a big “thank you” from the metal community for
unearthing and getting obscure releases such as Legend onto CD. A few lessons
from the roots of the NWOBHM wouldn’t hurt some high profile metal bands
currently popular. "Anthology" by Legend along with many other extremely
obscure metal releases are available from Monster Records. Please visit
