Almost 20 years ago, a band from the Pacific Northwest came onto
the scene playing melodic rock with a female singer that doubled as a saxaphone
player. Rindy Ross of Quarterflash had one of the smoothest and immediately
recognizable voices of the time period as most women were trying to sound like
Pat Benatar. Fast forward to 2002 and the California band Haven. Lead vocalist
Pamme has a much similar voice to Rindy Ross. Rich, smooth and most importantly
distinctive. The lead track from the 12 song Haven CD we received “The Curtain”
is a perfect example of this classy melodic hard rock style.
”Can You
Hear Us” is an upbeat AOR piece that reminds me of Sandy Stewart. The
balladic “All I Ever Need” sounds like it could have been a Vixen
tune, except Haven actually puts emotion behind the track. Guitarist John Vanselow
delivers the polished guitar leads and Michael Brody provides the bass
guitar. Vanselow especially shines on the harder edged “Strange Premonition”. Pamme shows a more aggressive side to her vocal talents on this track as
well. Overall, the CD seems to have a certain uplifting spiritual feel to
it without any overt Christian rock overtones.
AOR friendly Frontiers Records from Italy has signed the band to
a contract and has released a CD by Haven titled “The Road” in late 2001.
Guests on this CD include Robin McAuley (MSG, Gran Prix, Far Corporation,
V-Project) providing background vocals and Matt Sorum (The Cult, Guns N Roses)
on drums.
If you yearn for the days when radio-friendly bands had the ability to write
good songs spanning a variety of emotions while maintaining a strong sense of
melody, Haven is a band well worth searching out.
