Ferngully was founded in 1993 and has been
together with their existing line-up since 1998. Their last release, entitled
Slave, follows-up their first album Tunnel Visions, which sold an impressive
11,000 copies worldwide. The disc reached #38 on the Japanese charts. In 1997, they also
received rotation for a video clip for "Bad Conscience" on Germany's
music television station VIVA.
Today, the band is seeking representation, and
can be found on a compilation domestically on MS Records in Indiana. Based on
the Slave album, the band can be described as a modern, heavy, dark, and perhaps
even futuristic at first glance. However, tracks like "Charity" prove
that the band can diversify their style by offering up strong melodies that
could bring them into the mainstream.
Ferngully's music blends multiple elements that
make it difficult to categorize though it seems that it would be appropriate to
offer them the drive of bands like Anthrax and Megadeth and the modern sounds of
bands like Nine Inch Nails and Rob Zombie. Vocals are also difficult to explain
in words, because while some tracks offer a soft guiding voice like "The
Art Of…" it doesn't last. The band often introduces harsh and at time
incomprehensive vocals, thought it is difficult to tell why such anger is
introduced, since the sleeve for the disc doesn't offer up lyrics.
The band has a well-established on-line presence,
which has even won them awards and recognition in their German home. Their site
offers MP3 samples, as well as video footage from their recording sessions.
