Belgium's Double Diamond is
a very difficult band to describe. They play a unique brand of melodic
pseudo power metal, yet never allow themselves to be pinned down to one
particular style within the genre. The band claims in their bio that
no two songs sound the same on their "In Danger" CD and they do not
fail to live up to that promise.
Double Diamond seems to have a
mixture of influences and an extremely versatile vocalist in Filip Lemmens.
"Anubis" has a certain mid 80's power metal structure to it yet the
song sounds refreshingly unique. "Crimes Of Passion" has a a guitar
solo that hits you from out of nowhere and the song has a bit of a Maidenesque
gallop to it in parts. Guitarists Erwin Suetens and Tom Van Steenbergen shine
throughout the album with flawless riffs and intricate solos. The title track
"In Danger" is a fast paced, relentless composition made even more
edgy with the soaring vocals of Lemmens. "Shadow Of The World" is a
lush ballad where Lemmens vocal range gets into Geoff Tate territory.
Thus far, the band has sold over
2000 copies of their CD "In Danger" (produced by ex-Scorpions' drummer
Rudy Lenners). Touring throughout their native Belgium and Holland, Double
Diamond has had the opportunity to open for bands such as Hammerfall,
Annihilator and Overkill. With more touring experience, Double Diamond may find
bands being a little leary of having them as an opener as they have the
potential to develop into a top level international metal group.
