At first glance it seemed that Winger had strategically placed the
electric-acoustic guitar at center stage to keep the same opener that had graced
their set list on their summer tour with Poison (“Blind Revolution Mad” from the
band’s last Atlantic release, Pull). While Kip Winger did sneak his way
behind that guitar virtually unnoticed, he chose a selection from his most
recent and lesser known solo project Songs from the Ocean Floor. “Cross”
may have been a surprising opener, but the musicians in the audience appreciated
the talent showcase, and when the band kicked in with a heavy hitting version of
“Blind Revolution Mad” their was not a wavering fan in the audience.
The band continued with an
arsenal of favorites covering their entire career, even offering representations
from each of Kip Winger’s solo releases, as well as ample solo time for both
guitarist Reb Beach and drummer Rod Morgenstein. Though the band was sure to
include pop favorites like “Seventeen,” “Hungry,” and “Easy Come Easy Go,” and
ballads like “Headed’ for a Heartbreak,” and “Miles Away,” new arrangements,
strong vocal harmonies, and their dedicated musicianship left the greatest mark on the
evening. Other highlights included “Junkyard Dog,” “Rainbow in the Rose,” and
“Steam.”
Considering that this
Baltimore, Maryland performance was part of a very short stint of
Winger headlining dates, the Thunderdome was packed with only the most dedicated
Winger fanatics, including some who’d traveled great distances to catch the
show. And without question, there were no disappointments. In fact, the band
was even nice enough to mingle its way through the entire audience following the
show to individually greet each of their fans, sign autographs, and take
pictures.
