WASP
Metropol, Pittsburgh, PA (September 6, 2001)

True to his words from our interview with Blackie Lawless earlier this year, Blackie certainly does take care of his voice as evident by WASP’s recent performance in Pittsburgh.  While contemporaries such as Vince Neil, Stephen Pearcy and Ian Astbury must reply much more on their charisma these days in concert, Lawless still sounds as strong as he did when “Animal” came out over 17 years ago.

WASP’s set started out with a rather interesting medley of “Helldorado”, “The Electric Circus” and “Chainsaw Charlie” which spans a wide section of their career.  Blackie’s demon motorcylce from hell doubled as a mike stand and was a widely used prop throughout the show most notably on “My Tortured Eyes”.

Old favorites like “L.O.V.E. Machine”, “Wild Child”, “Animal”, and “Sleeping in the Fire” were prominent older songs in the set.   With their latest CD “Unholy Terror” being so strong, it was actually a shame to only have “Let It Roar” as the other new song in the set.  WASP finished up with I Wanna Be Somebody and the great singalong Blind In Texas.  To WASP’s credit, the crowd loudly for the encore and it was not an obligatory amount of applause for the band.  The crowd was really into this show and WASP delivered an actual performance.

The only problem with seeing WASP in a club is that there are so many great songs they could play, but never enough time available for a 2 hour set.  With the ferociousness of their set, stage presence and playing ability, I do not think WASP will be offered any opening positions on any summer festival tours in the USA.  This animal is still a mean man.
