Warrant vocalist
Jani Lane does not discriminate from town to town as he calls Ohio his home.
And, as Ohio fans know, when he performs locally, they are always given the
treat of a few little surprises during the set. But, this evening's performance
offered an interesting fashion move on Lane's part. He kicked things off
wearing a reflective orange crossing guard vest and stated that he couldn't be
caught in Massillon Tiger Country without wearing orange, after all, it was the
Tiger's stadium where they were playing.
The Down Boys
notably without recent line-up changes still include two additional original
members Erik Turner on guitar and Jerry Dixon on bass, as well as drummer Mike
(Sac) Fasano and guitarist Billy Morris (also from Ohio), who joined the band for
their latest album, Under the Influence.
From that
recent release, which consists mostly of covers, a new original, "Subhuman" was
offered up, but otherwise, the set consisted of the old favorites like "Dirty
Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich," "I Saw Red," and "Cherry Pie," and the heavier
grooves like "Machine Gun" and "Hole in My Wall" from Dog Eat Dog and "AYM"
from Belly to Belly.
The mandatory ballads, always dreaded by Lane, but enjoyed by the audience,
included "Heaven" and "Bed of Roses," but the ballad highlight was an
impromptu rendition of "Little Wing" performed by Lane and his brother Eric before Eric
began the introduction to "Uncle Tom's Cabin," as he often does at shows close
to home.
Other highlights included "So Damn Pretty" and a solo from the other local
boy, Billy Morris, who added a bit of Ozzy's "Crazy Train" and
Guns N Roses
"Welcome to the Jungle," just to stir things up (Good thing the former G-n-R
guitarist didn't do the same earlier that evening).
