Thunderstone is the latest Nuclear Blast band from Finland that delivers a melodic power metal punch that is however much more immediate than similar releases within this genre. The five-piece band was formed in 2000 by guitarist Nino Laurenne and features Titus Hjelm (bass), Kari Tornack (keyboards), Pasi Rantanen (vocals), and Mirka “Leka” Rantanen (drums).
“Let The Demons Free” and “Virus” call to mind “I Want Out” by Helloween but the rest of the CD calls to mind more modern influences. ”World’s Cry” moves along the lines of country-mates Stratovarius as does a great deal of the material here including “Will To Power” and “Me, My Enemy”.
On ”Eyes Of A Stranger” Pasi’s vocals are very clean and easy to decipher through his thin accent. “Like Father, Like Son” is an infectious speed romp that highlights Nino’s guitar prowess. The CD closes with the mid-tempo track “Voice Of A Dream” and the ballad “Spread My Wings”.
As I mentioned before, the ingredient that separates Thunderstone from a lot of other bands is there ability to write very catchy songs with strong hooks and sing-along choruses. Pasi’s vocals in the future should become even stronger than they are presently. The debut from Thunderstone contains 10 tracks without a boring track, a very impressive debut release.
