SAMMY
HAGAR & THE WABORITAS
Fans who caught on to Van
Halen later in their career and those who love the Red Rocker for his solo hits
also gave a great welcome to Sammy Hagar and his band the Waboritas. As he’s
done in the past, Hagar brought his Cabo Wabo club atmosphere along and a few
lucky contest winners (and waitresses serving up Waboritas), who were there to
cheer him on from the stage.
Appropriately, Hagar
opened with his namesake “Red,” and continued on with a surprising number of Van Halen hits like “Poundcake,” “Finish What Ya Started,” and “Why Can’t this Be
Love.” He even pulled out seldom heard cuts like “5150” and “Runaround.”
Because of time limits
from sharing headlining duties and opening this show, Hagar’s set is cut to a
mere hour and a half (instead of his typical two and a half hour party), but
after a few weeks in, he has luckily learned to balance things out by removing
the lengthy “Right Here, Right Now” from the end of the set and keeping his
usual commentary and drinking time to a minimum.
As always, classic crowd
pleasers like “I Can’t Drive 55,” “Heavy Metal,” and “One Way to Rock,” kept
Hagar on “Top of the World” with his fans, but the shortened performance didn’t
leave room for “Bad Motor Scooter,” his Montrose favorite “Rock Candy,” and
several well known Waborita tunes, including “Marching to Mars.” Though, newer
Hagar fans shouldn’t fret, because he did make room for “Little White Lie,” and
“Mas Tequilla.”
