Poison returned to a
heroes welcome for the 2002 Edition of the Glam Slam Metal Jam tour in
Pittsburgh. Thanks to a much stronger supporting lineup this year, the crowd
swelled to over 17000 screaming fans by the time the lights went down. As
customary, Poison exploded onto stage with their 1986 anthem “Look What The Cat
Dragged In” from their same-titled debut release.
Although Poison is supporting their new CD “Hollyweird”, they only played 2
songs from the disc. Bret dedicated their cover of The Who’s “Squeeze Box” to
bassist John Entwhistle, who had passed away during the week. The second track
from "Hollyweird" had a definite Samantha 7 feel as C.C. DeVille sang on “Emperors
New Clothes”. As in previous years, the transient DeVille was once again
adopted by the people of Pittsburgh…or at least Burgettstown, PA.
No Poison show would be complete without the hits, and they were aplenty. The
swagger of “Unskinny Bop” had the hips shaking and “Something To Believe In” and
“Every Rose Has Its Thorn” had the arms swaying in an incredible sea of lighters
dotting the crowd in unison. “I Want Action” and “Talk Dirty To Me” sent the
crowd into a metal salute waving frenzy.
During a mid-set break, Bret introduced a special guest. The surprise visitor
was NASCAR driver and former Daytona 500 winner Derrike Cope who on July 28th
will attempt to qualify the #37 Poison Ford in the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono
Raceway.

Closers “Rock And Roll All Nite” and “Nothin But A Good Time” sent the crowd
home worn out but happy. Bret asked us all if we’d have Poison back again next
year…as if we would say no to this good time! Poison has wisely kept their
stage show big and their image and aura even bigger. Having never dipped
back into the club circuit when times were lean in the mid 90’s, Poison has been
able to remain a larger than life juggernaut that shows no signs of letting up.
