Phoenix Reign

Another killer traditional metal demo from New York, Phoenix Reign originated in Greece in 1998 by founding members Billy Chrissochos and Chris Pollatos. They changed their name to Phoenix Reign symbolizing the band rose from the ashes of a once thriving metal scene.

The 4 track demo is raw and majestic recalling fellow New Yorkers Twilight Odyssey, Vixen (Hawaii) and Kim LaChance’s Malisha. Lead vocalist Theresa Gaffney has an excellent voice for traditional early 80′s based metal. Lead track “Another Night Alone” sounds like it came from one of the early Metal Massacre releases as does the track “Power” (Billy’s guitars have that Hawaii/Vixen sound that Marty Friedman utilized at one time). “One More Rendezvous” is a slightly laid-back song that highlights Theresa’s vocal strengths and slightly nods at one of her influences in Pat Benatar. That said, the guitar solos are still heavy and flashy within this song.

Considering the amazing obscure heavy metal releases that come out of Greece, it is no surprise that Billy’s guitar technique is steeped in traditional metal, free of any modern American tuning techniques or lack of riffs. Labels such as AFM, Adrenaline, LMP, Century Media and Nuclear Blast should take notice of the quality of material Phoenix Reign has been able to record on a small budget.
