Give it
up for the guys in black…
Keri Kelli, Brent Muscat, and Adam Hamilton currently join original guns Phil
Lewis and Steve Riley on the road, while the band’s namesake has taken a leave
of absence to work on a new project with the likes of Nikki Sixx.
Spending over thirteen hours on the road from Virginia, LA Guns arrived in
Pittsburgh Tuesday evening to christen a new all ages venue just East of the
city called the American Music Cafe. It was disappointing that the band took
the stage after midnight, since advertisements that listed the show as happening
between seven and eleven. But despite the long wait during which as a handful
of local bands played (in addition to the act that they are touring with) the
crowd held tight and was quite enthusiastic when the Hollywood Vamps turned up
the volume.
They kicked things off old school, but unfortunately it took a few songs before
Lewis’ monitor kicked in. Luckily, the PA system problems that plagued the show
seemed to be the only drawback they faced during the show. The new band line-up
was full of energy, talent, and great chemistry -- with three guitars and bass
tearing through most of the set, the sound was fuller than ever, especially on
tracks like “Long Time Dead.”
The set
covered every album that singer Phil Lewis had performed on. It included other
favorites like “Sex Action,” “Never Enough,” and a virgin performance of “Kiss
My Love Goodbye” (for this version of the band), as well as new material like
“Hellraisers Ball” and “Revolution” from the band’s latest release Waking the
Dead (Spitfire).
The most
encouraging moments of the evening included strong crowd participation not only
on the band’s biggest hit, “The Ballad of Jayne,” but also on a newer ballad
single “Beautiful” from their last release Man in the Moon (Spitfire). Perhaps
the band’s efforts in recent years to meet and greet their fans, in addition to
their extensive touring, is paying off with a more promising future that
includes fans new and old.

confirm the shows. After all, they are still braving the devastation left
behind from a record-breaking storm as they make their way up the east coast.
