The band opened
their set surrounded by a cloud of smoke and looked back on their history with
the “Hunter” and “Into the Fire” early on. They also made room for newer
material like “Little Girl” from their latest release Long Way from Home and
“Maddest Hatter” from Erase the Slate.
Plagued by a
revolving door of guitarists, Dokken has once again added a new band member,
Italian guitarist Alex DeRosso, who says he hopes that’ll he will be the last.
Despite the countless signature licks from George Lynch, Reb Beach, and even
John Norum needed to make the live show work, DeRosso was up to the challenge
and didn’t miss a note.
And despite the
additional absence of bassist Jeff Pilson, who usually sings “Just Got Lucky”
live, Don Dokken took over the duties, but unfortunately wasn’t prepared enough,
because he forgot the words (and drummer Mick Brown, wasn’t about to let it slip
by without teasing him a bit). Dokken also joined in on guitar for “In My
Dreams” while sporting a Masselin Tigers team jersey.
Other
interesting highlights from the show included a revamped version of “It’s Not
Love” featuring a bass solo from Barry Sparks with a little help from Wild Mick
on drums and Don Dokken on vocals. While the band also included songs like
“Tooth n Nail” and “Breaking the Chains" as headliners, there performance seemed
a bit too short. But considering a great number of exhausted fans had
already left by the time Dokken hit the stage, perhaps their short performance
was a blessing in disguise for those left over. Be sure to check out Alex DeRosso's personal Web
site at www.alexderosso.com for more
information about the newest addition the Dokken clan.
