While many bands have
scored their hits and faded away, Aerosmith offers a colorful past and
from the looks of their recent accomplishments, a vibrant
future.
While most hard rock
bands can "Dream On" when it comes to crossover success today,
these rock 'n roll vets have accomplished the task and broken boundaries
that are likely to make most record execs cringe. They've scored a
#1 Billboard single, lead the revolution on the fusion of rock and rap
genres, and most importantly they come back stronger with each new
release...
Their latest album, Just
Push Play comprised most of the set as expected, with "Beyond
Beautiful," as an opener and "Jaded" and "Just Push
Play" following close behind.
With news of guitarist
Slash (Slash's Snakepit, Guns 'n Roses) being a special guest in the house
that evening, it seemed appropriate that he'd join in for "Mama
Kin," seeing that GNR had successful taken on a cover of the song
several years ago.
But, instead, that song
served as a diversion as the band prepared for their secured attempt to
deliver those on the lawn a virtual front row seat - for a few songs
anyway.
While the law crowd
surely appreciated the great view, being among those who dished out close
to $100 for a great view of the main stage, it was clear that the sound
for the trio of classics "Song and Dance," "Dream On,"
and "Chip Away at the Stone," was less than desirable in the
pavilion.
When the band return to
the main stage, they continued on with more classics like "Walk This
Way" and "Sweet Emotion" and a few newer songs including
"Pink" from their Nine Lives release, and "I Don't Wanna
Miss A Thing." Surprising
additions were "Big Ten Inch Record" and "Seasons of
Wither," while "Rag Doll" and "Dude (Looks Like a
Lady)" were excluded.
Incidentally, Slash did
make an appearance, surprising the audience during an encore jam of
"Train Kept A Rollin," which was refreshing instead of hearing
its extended solos mid-set.
