Katagory 5 - Present Day
While the 2002 Winter Olympics are in the spotlight in Salt Lake City, UT, it appears that the heavy metal scene has a definite presence under the name of Katagory 5. This band would have been right at home on the late, great Internet radio station KRAR (out of Salt Lake City and Orem, UT). Katagory 5's music has traces of Nevermore, Metal Church, early 80’s power metal and occasional progressive interludes throughout their debut CD “Present Day”.
Lynn Allers vocals at times are similar to those of Warrel Dane (Sanctuary, Nevermore).
”Evil Princess” is the standout track of the disc, calling to mind the 2nd Leatherwolf CD. “The Call Of Midnight” has a very foreboding aura surrounding it. Tracks such as “The Beginning Of The End” and “Steel Dungeon” remind me very much of the debut Metal Church CD. “Morning Light” has the most progressive leanings of any track, recalling “Eye To Eye” by Fates Warning.
Katagory 5’s “Present Day” is one of those discs that is best suited for late at night, especially long road trips through the mountains! Multiple spins of this disc are recommended, as it is not an immediately rewarding CD. After about 4 spins, you will be pleasantly surprised with the results.
