EMPIRE - Trading Souls

Rolf Munkes returns with a bluesier release in "Trading Souls" than his last Empire release "Hypnotica". Perhaps it has to do with those British guys that are involved, namely Tony Martin (Black Sabbath), Neil Murray (Whitesnake, Vow Wow) and Donald Airey (Deep Purple). Oh yes, Anders Johansson from Hammerall on drums contributes to this release along with previous Munkes collaborator Gerald Kloos.

If you are looking for a return to Munkes Vanize days, this CD does not have that German power metal vibe. "Trading Souls" is more an album of feel and emotion rather than shredding power. "Did You Ever Love Me" is a fine example of Martin's vocals sharing the stage with Munkes beautiful guitar parts. The emotional rollercoaster of this song makes it one of the standouts on this disc. While "Hypnotica" jumped out at me instantly due to Lance King and Mark Boals outstanding vocals, "Trading Souls" is more of a slowly growing release. While I find Martin's era in Black Sabbath to be their finest (yes, better than Ozzy!) his more recent endeavors have not been as immediately gratifying. After about 3 listens, "Wherever You Go" and "Back In The Light" start to become welcome friends.

Rolf Munkes evolution into a guitarist of all styles of classic metal has definitely endeared him to many new fans who are fans of the other legendary members of his group. "Trading Souls" is full-sounding disc, highlighted by expert musicianship and intelligent songwriting.
