ABYSS - Sin Angeles

Abyss are a Spanish progressive metal band who have a lush sound and draw immediate comparisons to early 90's Fates Warning. Sung in Spanish by vocalist Jamie Garcia, it is immediate apparent from the opening track "Sed" that Abyss are on a higher plane than most bands in this genre. AFTERSHOK - Burning Chrome

I recently picked up the 2nd release by Aftershok titled "Burning Chrome" after a day of listening to mediocre progressive metal releases in my car trying to figure out which band was which. Read the complete AFTERSHOK - Burning Chrome review...

AFTERSHOK - Unfinished Business

American heavy metal in recent times has more to do with sub genres than with no frills, loud guitars and a screaming vocalist. Rising from the ashes of the mighty Shok Paris, Vic Hix returns with Aftershok, a new band/lineup with a same straight ahead heavy metal style. Read the complete AFTERSHOK - Unfinished Business review...

AGALLOCH - Pale Folklore

Sorrow never sounded so good. Agalloch's Pale Folklore is a symphonic depressent of well structured compositions and tales of misery as told through the sunken eyes of J. Haughm and S. Breyer. "The Painted Fire Across The Skyline" strikes like a long lost Bathory epic with a twist, a beautiful operatic female vocal is entwined within semi-harsh male vocal growls. Read the complete AGALLOCH - Pale Folklore review...

ALAS - Absolute Purity

Alas delivers a gothic, ethereal composition with their release “Absolute Purity”. Erik Rutan’s (Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal, Ripping Corpse) style on this release may be significantly different than previous works, but the risk of this album is definitely worth the rewards. Read the complete ALAS - Absolute Purity review...

Alice Cooper - Dragontown

Anyone who has heard the Last Temptation (Epic) or Brutal Planet (Spitfire) will find themselves in familiar territory when they visit Dragontown (Spitfire), the latest chapter in what is now being called a trilogy. Again Cooper has conveyed a story with the assistance of Bob Marlette and Bob Ezrin, who teamed up with him on the last chapter. Thus, the instant familiarity that this album offers is not surprising. Read the complete Alice Cooper - Dragontown review...

American Dog - Last of a Dying Breed

American Dog is Steve Theado (guitar), Keith Pickens (drums), and Michael Hannon (bass, lead vocals). Hannon may look familiar to some, because he was a member of Salty Dog and toured with Dangerous Toys, prior to forming the band Hilljack, which eventually evolved into American Dog. Read the complete American Dog - Last of a Dying Breed review...

AMON AMARTH - Versus The World

Amon Amarth’s second American release on Metal Blade Versus The World picks up where their 2001 release The Crusher left off. With nine new brutal death metal tracks, Amon Amarth incorporates enough melodies to lure traditional power metal fans while not ignoring their Swedish death metal roots. Read the complete AMON AMARTH - Versus The World review...

ANAND - Joy 4 Ever

Winner of the best guitar player in Holland in 1996 and 1997, Anand Mahangoe delivers a dynamic instrumental CD with some exciting soloing and most importantly quality songs that beg multiple listens. From the subtleties of "Intimate Dance" to the straight ahead "Meet Mr. Long", Anend shows a reserved flair that is interesting as opposed to an overabundance of flash. That is not to say that Anand does not possess the ability to craft some sultry metal tracks. Read the complete ANAND - Joy 4 Ever review...

Andromeda - Extension Of The Wish

Picture Rush or even Dream Theater playing full driving power progressive heavy metal and you have a clear image of the 7 works from Andromeda on “Extensions Of The Wish”. All 7 compositions are at least 5 minutes in length but never get redundant or boring. Read the complete Andromeda - Extension Of The Wish review...

Andromeda - II = I

Andromeda's second release finds the Swedish band with a new lead vocalist in David Fremberg and another batch of technically proficient tracks. "II=I" is a challenging disc to listen to as guitarist (and bassist for the CD) Johan Reinholdz has composed 9 complex tracks of progressive metal. Andromeda's Reinholdz avoids the pratfalls of being immediately compared to Dream Theater by constructing songs that do not have purely progressive leanings at all times. Read the complete Andromeda - II = I review...

Angel Blake - Angel Blake

Angel BlakeMarko Tervonen's split from the Crown has resulted in the formation of Angel Blake.  While I always found the Crown to be musically excellent, the extreme vocals made listening to their material a challenge.

ANGEL DUST - Of Human Bondage

Initial reports about the latest CD from Angel Dust did not bode well for longtime fans of the band. All indications pointed towards a much more modern sound for this release, which usually spells trouble for diehard fans. Read the complete ANGEL DUST - Of Human Bondage review...

Annihilator - Carnival Diablos

Jeff Waters and company rebound nicely once again from the second controversial departure of vocalist Randy Rampage. "Criteria For A Black Widow" was solid, personal release (for Waters) and "Carnival Diablos" may be the finest effort of Annihilator's career.

Enlisting in former Liege Lord vocalist Joe Comeau proves beneficial in replacing Rampage. Comeau's vocals on the lead track "Denied" hint slightly at his past and bear a striking resemblance to those of Perry McCarthy of Warrior. Read the complete Annihilator - Carnival Diablos review...

ANTIQUUS - Ramayana

Antiquus - RamayanaAccording to their web site; Antiquus' ambitious first album "Ramayana", a 60-minute epic that takes the listener from the bazaars and palaces of India's history to the future-realms of cyberspace. Without a doubt - it is quite unlike typical indie records. Read the complete ANTIQUUS - Ramayana review...

Arcane Dimension - In Ecstasy & Sorrow

Arcane DimensionThe last time I heard a CD that had such a moribund, anguished tone to it such as Aracane Dimension possesses was the debut release by Fear Of God, fronted by the late Dawn Crosby. Lead vocalist Teresa Camp may not equal the sorrow of Crosby, but she certainly has a desperate sound to her vocals. Read the complete Arcane Dimension - In Ecstasy & Sorrow review...

ARK - Burn The Sun

This disc is a David Coverdale fans dream come true. That is not to say that ARK sounds anything like Whitesnake or Deep Purple, but it is very clear that vocalist Jorn Lande has hugely been influenced by the bluesy rasp of Mr. Read the complete ARK - Burn The Sun review...

ARTENSION - New Discovery

Artension’s 6th CD release “New Discovery” is a well-rounded piece of neo-classical metal that is enhanced by the quality of the diverse musicians. Artension consists of John West (Royal Hunt) on vocals, Vitalij Kuprij (Ring Of Fire) on keyboards, Kevin Chown (Magnitude 9) on bass, Mike Terrana (Rage, Axel Rudi Pell) on drums, and Roger Staffelbach on guitar. ASCENSION THEORY - Regeneration

A definite sleeper disc we received from Lance King and Nightmare records. Ascension Theory is a progressive metal band that actually caught my attention on the first listen. Creative mastermind for Ascension Theory is Tim Becker formerly of Aztec Jade.

Guest vocalist Jodi St. John immediately impressed with her smooth vocal style that sounds amazingly similar to Liz Vandall (wife of Uli Jon Roth) of Sahara. She is featured on two tracks on the disc and sounds absolutely enchanting on "Lovers (I'll Wait For You)". Read the complete ASCENSION THEORY - Regeneration review...

Ashes To Ashes - Big Moving Parts

Since 1993, Ashes to Ashes has been playing the local and regional club circuit surrounding Pittsburgh, PA opening for the likes of Slaughter, Union, Motley Crue, Scorpions, Def Leppard, and others.  And when headlining their own club gigs in front of a large following of loyal fans, the band is known for delivering a few sets packed with a few cover tunes as well as "classic" Ashes to Ashes songs like the ever popular "Eat Me, I'm A Hoagie."

ASPERITY - The Final Demand

Featruring members of Steel Attack among others, Asperity is a heavy metal side project that has proven to be a step above many of the releases we receive. Vocalist Peter Kronberg sounds somewhat similar to Paul Shortino (Rough Cutt, Quiet Riot) with his raspy, but powerful vocal ability. Lead track "Will They Come" is a straight-ahead opening track with no particular flash. The vocal harmonies on "The Pray" call to mind Queensryche and TNT as the song recalls perhaps the "Empire" era of the Ryche. Read the complete ASPERITY - The Final Demand review...

Astra

Melodic metal from Brazil with hints of progressive rock thrown in for good measure. Astra has a sound similar to mid to late period Fates Warning (musically and vocally) modern TNT and occasional hints of modern Dokken. Astra takes a real laidback approach to most of the songs adding a groove instead of straight-ahead power. Perhaps the modern elements are what leave me a bit cold, but Astra is missing a bit of something in the songs to make people stand up and take notice.

ASTRAL DOORS Of The Son and The Father

Sweden's answer to Ronnie James Dio era Black Sabbath, Astral Doors delivers a classic metal release that owes a great deal to the previously mentioned man and band. Vocalist Nils Patrik Johansson (Space Odyssey, Wuthering Heights) is a dead ringer for Dio and to me sounds much better doing this type of material than he does for Wuthering Heights.

Musically, the bands takes the best elements of post-Ozzy Black Sabbath, Rainbow and Deep Purple to fill the niche that has been a void of this style since Tony Martin vacated the vocal duties in Black Sabbath. Read the complete ASTRAL DOORS Of The Son and The Father review...

ATA D'ARC - Call Of Peace

Brazil's Ata D'Arc unleashes their power metal debut "Call Of Peace" possessing a vocalist that sounds nearly dead on to the mighty Rob Halford. On the lead title track singer Tulio Cesar Torres unleashes his metal god vocal prowess in fine fashion along his the Halfordesque intonations. The song however sounds like it was written by Riot during the late 1990's. Read the complete ATA D'ARC - Call Of Peace review...

ATMOSFEAR - Inside The Atmosphere

The first full-length CD by Atmosfear, "Into The Atmosphere", possesses qualities that call to mind such bands as Dream Theater and later Savatage. Read the complete ATMOSFEAR - Inside The Atmosphere review...

Aurora K - 11th Hour

If ever a melodic hard rock band had a chance to re-energize this style in the United States Aurora K would be a stronger contender. Aurora K is based out of Finland and is a two person project featuring Johnny A. on guitar and Katriina on vocals. Read the complete Aurora K - 11th Hour review...

Avantasia - The Metal Opera

The all-star lineup includes members of Stratovarius, Gamma Ray, Virgin Steele, Helloween, Rhapsody, Angra and Within Temptation. Read the complete Avantasia - The Metal Opera review...
