Gothic Metal

Dogma - Dirty Dark Diane

The Dogma is an Italian band whom we first reviewed of about 7 years ago.  Their brand of symphonic metal at the time recalled Rage for Order era Queensryche.  Now, the Dogma has taken on a darker, ever so slightly gothic metal approach with their latest release Black Widow.  Dirty Dark Diane is their latest video and features the gorgeous Sophie Cirlig.

Odes Of Ecstasy - Deceitful Melody

Hauntingly beautiful in its darkness, Odes Of Ecstasy’s 2nd release “Deceitful Melody” is an exotic masterpiece of despair. The Greek band’s 8 song, ambient gothic metal release on The End Records is in the upper echelon of the genre along side Therion and Theatre Of Tragedy. Metal Years - Compilation

Spitfire Records attempt to spread the good word of metal finds the label releasing “Metal Massacre” styled releases only by established bands instead of unsigned groups. I always felt Metal Blade did an impressive job of introducing bands in the Metal Massacre series (Versions I through VII at least). Spitfire has culled tracks from bands on labels including Noise, Metal Blade, InsideOut America, Nuclear Blast and Century Media for these compilations. OPERATIKA - Dreamworld

Operatika is a 5-piece female fronted band from New York who has released a 4-track disc titled "Dreamworld". Vocalist Slava Popova bears a striking vocal resemblance to former Nightwish vocalist Tarja Turunen. While this comparison can be made, musically, Operatika takes a heavier, more straight-ahead approach to their music. Lead track "Dreamworld" not only features Slava's gorgeous lush vocals, but some serious guitars riffs and solos from Bill Visser. Read the complete OPERATIKA - Dreamworld review...

DARKWELL - Metatron

Stephanie Luzie has one of those absolutely angelic voices that stands out in a growing field of similar bands within the gothic metal genre. Darkwell's latest release "Metatron" is a rather enjoyable listen that swirls into progressive territory at times on the disc. The lead track "Fate Prisoner" makes for an excellent metal radio single. "Strange" possesses many progressive elements and steers clear of the gothic tinges. SOUL TAKERS - Tides

Dramatic gothic hard rock is the style incorporate by Italy's Soul Takers. Tides is a dark journey that incorporates mainly male (clean) vocals interspersed at times with female vocals. Vocalist Dino Brentali sounds similar at time to Queensryche's Geoff Tate in terms of hitting the highs and lows within the same verse. Brentali also hints at Tony Harnell from TNT. TRAIL OF TEARS - Free Fall Into Fear

"Free Fall Into Fear" by Trail Of Tears is dark journey into the the realms of black, power and gothic metal. With the departure of Cathrine Paulsen, the vocals are now strictly male going between clean, death growls and black metal shrieks. Read the complete TRAIL OF TEARS - Free Fall Into Fear review...

EVANESCENCE - Fallen

Fans of bands like Nightwish, The Gathering, Lennon Murphy and Lacuna Coil are either rejoicing or cursing Evanescence. Their brand of atmospheric gothic rock / metal is quite comparable to all bands mentioned above yet they are the ones in the Billboard Top 10 Album chart. Quickly, Evanescence’s independent releases are fetching big $$$ on eBay. Read the complete EVANESCENCE - Fallen review...

CIRRHA NIVA - Liaison de la Morte

Cirrha Niva is a Dutch theatrical hard rock band that defies you to pigeon-hole their style. Combining elements from Broadway music, jazz, classical and heavy metal, Cirrha Niva is more likely to find success in the theater scene in the USA before finding a niche with America's musically programmed youth. "Liaison de la Morte" weaves a sinister tale of life and death, love and loss that takes several listens to sink in. This is definitely not an instant gratification CD.
