SOLEFALD - Pills Against The Ageless Ills

Hailing from Norway, Solefald offers a complex version of black metal weaved into a chilling concept album Pills Against The Ageless Ills. While the band consisting of Cornelius and Lazare describe their style as “Red Music With Black Edges” or “Radical Designer Rock N Roll”, I would describe it as “The Soundtrack of Hell As Seen Through The Twilight Zone”. AGALLOCH - Pale Folklore

Sorrow never sounded so good. Agalloch's Pale Folklore is a symphonic depressent of well structured compositions and tales of misery as told through the sunken eyes of J. Haughm and S. Breyer. "The Painted Fire Across The Skyline" strikes like a long lost Bathory epic with a twist, a beautiful operatic female vocal is entwined within semi-harsh male vocal growls. HAVAYOTH - His Creation Reversed

An atmospheric metal CD sans female vocals, Havayoth’s “His Creation Reversed” features the songwriting of Marcus Norman (aka Vargher of Bewitched, Ancient Wisdom) and the powerful vocals of A. Hedlund (aka Vintersorg). Hedlund’s vocals have the same full-bodied, deep tone that make “Cosmic Genesis” by Vintersorg such an excellent album especially on “Mirrors”, Read the complete HAVAYOTH - His Creation Reversed review...

BORKNAGAR - Empiricism

Vintersorg once again roars, this time on Borknagar's latest release "Empiricism". This release has a much more heavier, darker direction than the soothing sounds of the ambient Havayoth CD and his recent "Cosmic Genesis" release. The vocals switch between clean and growl throughout the release. Oystein still is the lead guitarist for the band and his new partnership with Vintersorg has produced an excellent result. The Crown - Crowned In Terror

The Black / Death metal genre often times finds bands recycling other bands riffs and songs more often than not. However, bands like The Crown rise above the spew of mediocrity and create a wicked CD that is both diverse and offers something new while still tipping their hat to past thrash metal legends. MUSTAN KUUN LAPSET - Suruntuoja

Mustan Kuun Lapset is a Black Metal Band from Finland whose name translates to Children Of Black Moon in English. Their latest release is titled "Suruntuoja" and is sung entirely in Finnish. Do not let the language barrier keep you away from this CD, as it is one of the better black metal releases I have heard in recent years. For a band that is on a rather small label, Nothern Sound Records out of Finland, "Suruntuoja" has an excellent sound and mostly importantly is well produced. NAER MATARON - River At Dash Scalding

The 3rd release by the Greek Black Metal band Naer Mataron "River At Dash Scalding" is an extreme, high speed blast of heaviness that pays homage to their apparent Norwegian influences. This becomes obvious after checking out their booklet as they are wearing corpse paint and carrying some rather punishing looking weapons that would never make through a checkpoint! HORTUS ANIMAE - Waltzing Mephisto

Italy's Hortus Animae takes a vastly different direction than many of the Rhapsody clones that come out their homeland. Hortus Animae falls more in line with countrymates Opera IX in creating an ambience of black evil and more importantly, a unique style to themselves.

"A Lifetime Obscurity" has a lovely gothic intro that disintegrates into a black metal pit of misery. "Springtime Deaths" also has more of a gothic vibe throughout the track before take a similar descent. Read the complete HORTUS ANIMAE - Waltzing Mephisto review...

PROJECT FAILING FLESH - A Beautiful Sickness

Featuring Eric Forrest (Voivod, E-Force), Project: Failing Flesh is a 3-piece extreme metal juggernaut that has come up with a most interesting release in a sea of mediocre bands attempting similar types of music. Read the complete PROJECT FAILING FLESH - A Beautiful Sickness review...
