MARKED BY THE MEDICINE CD Cover

Marked By The Medicine in a Pittsburgh, PA area band that blends several styles (power metal, black metal and a dose of punk metal for good measure) and comes up with wickedly appealing 5-song independent debut release.

Lead vocalist Anthony sounds like a cross between Child Of Fire era Brian "Butch" Balich (now of Penance) and former D Generation leader vocalist Jesse Malin.  The opening track "Pick A Number Pick A Color" sounds like a cross between Iron Maiden, In Flames and D Generation with its excellent vocals, tight musicianship and black metal shrieks on the background vocals.  "Burning Bridges Never Felt So Right" has almost a progressive metal slant to it with its start and stop guitars but soon takes some interesting serves into a mellow territory, then black metal territory before finishing.

"Gone" is more of a modern rock track leaning towards the less aggressive moments of D Generation but still emphasizing a good guitar sound by Erik.  Thankfully, there are no tuned-downed guitars on this release.  "The Anorexic Line" is a punk metal anthem with the black metal screams contrasting the clean vocals and is probably the strongest track on the release.  Closing track "If All Goes Well, We'll Be Dead By Dawn" possesses on of those slow Iron Maiden builds before developing in a melodic metal track.  Throughout the entire release, the backend of Steve (bass) and Matt (drums) lay a solid foundation that is actually discernable and meaningful which is typically rare for the demos we receive.

Usually, I curse the use of black metal shrieks contrasting clean vocals, but Marked By The Medicine have found a way to make them work.  This demo possesses enough diversity that fans of both metal and punk could find something interesting to their liking.  For more information about Marked By The Medicine, please contact the band at their web site below.
